Zyrtec tablets are used to treat allergic rhinitis which includes symptoms like nasal stuffiness, running nose, watery eyes and sneezing. It is also used in the treatment of urticaria or what is called hives.

Zyrtec is available as tablets in the doses of Zyrtec 5 mg tablet and Zyrtec 10 mg tablet. It is also available as Zyrtec syrup and Zyrtec chewables for pediatric use. Zyrtec is also available as an over the counter drug (OTC) all over the drug. This is the most commonly and popularly used anti allergic drug.

The side effects of Zyrtec are drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, dark urine and icterus. It may cause pain in the abdomen and vomiting in children. It may also be allergic to some people. The allergic symptoms include itching, rashes, swelling and difficulty in breathing. In these conditions you should seek medical attendance immediately.

Certain precautions should be taken before using Zyrtec. It is advisable to inform the physician if you suffer from kidney and liver diseases. It is better to avoid engaging in activities that need attention like driving and operating machineries. This because even though Zyrtec or Cetrizine is a non sedative anti histamine, it is the most sedative drug among the non sedative anti histamines. It should not be used along with other sedatives, anti anxiety drugs like Diazepam, other anti histamines, anti convulsants, muscle relaxants, and other psychiatric drugs.

Zyrtec 5 mg and Zyrtec 10 mg tablets should not be used in pregnancy unless otherwise extremely needed. Similarly, Zyrtec is secreted in the milk. Hence it is to be avoided during lactation. Zyrtec tablets should be used with caution in the elderly.
