Pulmicort inhalers are used to treat allergic rhinitis and asthmatic attacks. Pulmicort reduces the inflammatory reactions and relieve the spasm of the airways caused by asthma. Pulmicort inhaler which contains Budesonide gets directly by the inner lining of the bronchial airways. However, only 39% of the inhaled Budesonide is absorbed by the body.

Pulmicort is not available as generic Pulmicort. Pulmicort is available as Pulmicort Turbuhaler 200 mcg. Each 200 mcg actuation delivers 160 mcg of Budesonide. It is also available as Pulmicort Respules in the doses of 0.25 mg/2 ml, 0.5 mg/2 ml and 1 mg/ 2 ml suspension.

Pulmicort inhaler is used to prevent attacks of asthma. It is not used treat an attack of asthma which has already begun. Pulmicort inhaler is used in children older than 6 years and in adults. The dosage for the children and the children varies. In adults the usual dosage is 1-4 puffs twice daily whereas in children it is 1-2 puffs twice daily. For milder attacks of asthma even once daily dose is sufficient.

The side effects of Pulmicort are light headedness, abdominal discomfort, oral thrush or oral candidiasis, cough, hoarseness of voice, sore throat, dry mouth, bad taste in the mouth, bleeding nose and nasal irritation. Rarely allergic reactions like swelling of the face, difficulty in breathing, severe acne, menstrual problems may occur in which case you should seek medical assistance.

Drugs like Ketaconazole and Erythromycin may increase the blood levels of Budesonide. This may lead to the side effects of Budesonide.

It is better to avoid Pulmicort in pregnancy and lactation. However, it can be used depending on the risk benefit ratio. There are not yet proven studies available on the effects of Pulmicort on the fetus.
