Phenergan is a phenothiazine derivative. It does not inhibit the secretion of histamine but it inhibits the histamine H1 blockers.

Phenergan is available as oral tablets or rectal suppositories. Since it has an antiemetic, antihistaminic and sedative action, it is used to treat the related conditions. The dosage of Phenergan is 25 mg. Phenergan 25mg is taken before bedtime for treating allergies. Phenergan 25 mg is also used to treat transfusion reactions which are minor.

For treating motion sickness Phenergan 25 mg is the adequate dose. It should be taken twice daily, the first dose is to be taken one hour before travelling and the next dose should be taken after 8 hours.

For sedation and pre operative and post operative use, Phenergan should be used in the dosage of 12.5 mg to 25 mg in children and 25- 50 mg in adults.

The Phenergan 25 mg tablet is available as a white tablet with the letters WYETH printed on one side and “27” printed on the other side.

The side effects of Phenergan involve almost all the systems of the body. It can cause somnolence, blurred vision, oculogyris, torticollis or wry neck, tinnitus, euphoria, an increase or decrease in the blood pressure, fainting, dermatitis, urticaria, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenic purpura, nausea, vomiting, icterus, respiratory depression angioneurotic edema and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.

Phenergan tablets and suppositories are contraindicated in children below 2 years of age. It is reported that the use of Phenergan in children less than 2 years of age cause fatal respiratory depression.

Patients with compromised lung diseases like COPD, asthma, seizure disorders, patients on other CNS depressants and patients suffering from bone marrow depression should avoid using Phenergan tablets and suppositories.
