Flonase is available as a nasal spray. Being a steroid it is used to treat allergies. Flonase is used to treat the nasal congestion, running nose and sneezing caused by allergy. It may be seasonal allergy or an allergy which is present all through the year. Flonase is used to treat allergic rhinitis and hay fever.

Flonase being a steroid may cause congenital anomalies in the fetus. But there no reports available yet regarding its teratogenicity. However Flonase is categorized as FDA class C drug. It is better to avoid using Flonase or generic Flonase during lactate too. Flonase nasal spray is to be avoided in children younger than 4 years of age. It is reported that steroids generally cause growth retardation in children.

Flonase nasal spray is to be used with caution in patients suffering from acute narrow angle glaucoma, severe liver diseases, sores or ulcers in the nose. Flonase nasal spray being a steroid can cause immune suppression. Hence it should not be used in immune compromised states like liver failure, tuberculosis, chicken pox, measles and herpes infections.

The drug Flonase is also available as an over the counter (OTC) drug. The cost of the drug also varies. However the generic Flonase cost is comparatively cheaper than the branded ones.

The side effects of Flonase OTC are headache, nasal bleeding which may be minimal or severe, menstrual problems, sore throat, pain in the sinus, cough, nasal sores, and flu like symptoms, fever, chills, body aches and allergic reactions like swelling of the lips, throat and breathing difficulty. In case of severe side effects it is advisable to contact a physician.

The dose of Flonase nasal spray is one or two sprays in each nostril once daily.
