Decadron is potent glucocorticosteroid with a wide variety of uses. It is used in the treatment of allergic conditions like asthma, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, drug hypersensitivity reactions, seasonal and perennial rhinitis, and serum sickness, skin diseases like Steven Johnson’s syndrome, bullous dermatitis, exfoliative erythroderma and pemphigus, endocrine disorders like adrenal insufficiency, adrenal hyperplasia, hypercalcemia associated with cancer, gastrointestinal disease like ulcerative colitis and enteritis, hematological disorders like acquired autoimmune hemolytic anemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenia, and tuberculous meningitis.

The dosage of Decadron in treating shock is 4 -8 mg intravenously initially followed by a repeat dose if necessary. In long term therapy of auto immune diseases and inflammations, 0.5 to 1.5 mg per day is the dose. Decadron is available as 0.5 mg and Decadron 1 mg tablets also.
The contraindications of Decadron are Cushing’s syndrome, existing GI ulcerations, severe hypertension, severe cardiovascular diseases, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, systemic tuberculosis, severe systemic viral, bacterial and fungal infections and osteoporosis.
The side effects of Decadron are similar to that of any other steroid drugs. This includes GI ulceration, increased weight gain due to increased appetite; immunosuppressant which may be life threatening, muscle atrophy, euphoria, mania, irritability, Cushingoid syndrome, hypertension, latent diabetes may become evident, dependence, withdrawal syndrome, glaucoma, acne, allergic reactions, increased chances of infections due to immunosuppressant action and urticaria.
