Claritin is an antihistamine commonly used to relieve the symptoms of fever and certain symptoms of upper respiratory allergies such as sneezing, runny nose, stuffiness, itching, and tearing eyes. It also treats the symptoms of hives, including swollen, red, itchy patches of the skin. It is also available as Claritin OTC (over-the-counter product).

Claritin is sold several forms including in syrup form, regular tablets, and fast-dissolving tablets known as Reditabs. The Reditabs are to be placed on the tongue and not be swallowed as they disintegrate quite fast and cant be administered with or without water.

If you missed a dose take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not take a double dosage at your next scheduled dose to make up for a missed one as this may lead to an overdose.

Claritin should be kept at room temperature to avoid it expiring before the predicted time. However, the Reditabs are to be stored in a dry place. Do not use Claritin tablets for over a 6 months period after having opened the foil pouch in which they were packed, if you still have Claritin doses in the pouch after 6 months, contact your pharmacist for details about how to dispose of it and contact your doctor for more tablets. And take the tablets within hours after retrieving them from their individual blisters.

For adults, the usual dose is of 10mg once a day, a tablet of Claritin 10mg or 2 teaspoonfuls of syrup. For people suffering from liver or kidney diseases, the regular dosage is of 10mg every 48 hours.

The Claritin tablets are not prescribed to children of 2 years old to 5 years old. The syrup’s usual dosage for children is of one teaspoonful daily, and once every 48 hours if they suffer from liver or kidney diseases.
